Mesothelioma treatment Facts About Asbestos Lung Mesotheliom

mesotheliomatreatmentoptions.org Mesothelioma cancer, which is classified into three according to the area infected by each of these, is caused by asbestos particles inhaled mostly at workplaces. The three types are the pleural mesothelioma (that affects the mesothelium around the lung cavities), the peritoneal (found in the lining of the abdomen) and the pericardial (which attacks the heart cavities). The former, which attacks the lining of the lungs, is also called asbestos lung mesothelioma because it affects the lung cavities and is caused by asbestos.

Mesothelioma diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a deadly disease that annually causes about 3000 Americans. The average life span of patients with this disease is less than 24 months after diagnosis. Many workers who have worked hard to put the needs of their families and keep America running like a wonderful place to live with this disease suffer in their golden years.

Mesothelioma is a fabric that protects the chest and abdominal cavities, and theCavity surrounding the heart. It produces a special fluid that lubricates the internal organs so that they can move around.

Malignant Mesothelioma occurs when the mesothelial cells function abnormally and reproduces itself. This can occur in the outer envelope of most internal organs. For localized stage, the disease in the lining of the chest cavity, lungs or diaphragm to take.

Advanced malignant mesothelioma can be classified into three stages (stage II, III and IV). During stage II, the tumor spreads past the breast feeding in the lymph nodes. In stage III, the tumor invades the chest wall, the breast center, heart, peritoneum or diaphragm, etc. Stage IV or the last stage, the spread of cancer to other organs already.

The cancer affects the abdominal lining called the peritoneal mesothelioma, and that the impact on the pericardial cavity (the "sack-like" space around the heart) is called pericardial effusion> Mesothelioma. Sometimes also affects the covering of the testicles.

The tumors of the mesothelium can be either non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). Symptoms may include chest pain, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling or shortness of breath.

Diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma

The first step in the diagnosis of mesothelioma is by X-rays and scans. This is followed by either thoracoscopy (for pleural cancer) orperitoneoscopy (for peritoneal cancer). A biopsy will be necessary if discovered an abnormal tissue, where a piece of tissue for microscopic examination to be taken.

The doctor will then decide whether the disease is in a localized stage or already advanced. This and the location of the tumor as well as taking into account age, health history of the patient mesothelioma treatment option is presented. The options are: 1) the use of special drugs(Chemotherapy), 2) the use of high-energy rays (radiation) or 3) the removal of the tumor (surgery).

In the case of an accumulation of fluid in the chest or abdomen, the patient must undergo the process of thoracentesis or paracentesis to drain the fluid.

Mesothelioma: What It Is, Its Causes, and Treatment

What is mesothelioma, what causes it, and how is mesothelioma treated? Mesothelioma is really a form of cancer that starts within the mesothelial lining for the lungs, heart, or abdomen. Mesothelioma is mostly a rare cancer usually involving the lungs and is caused by contact with asbestos. Asbestos is made from tiny fibers, frequently used to produce insulation inside housing, educational institutions and other buildings.

Asbestosis

Pleural Mesothelioma

In addition to mesothelioma, contact with asbestos raises the danger of indiscriminate lung cancer diagnoses that may often be attributed to smoking or else other hazards. Asbestosis, a noncancerous, constant lung illness is thought to arise from asbestos subjection, as well as other cancers belonging to the larynx (throat) and kidneys.

Mesothelioma: What It Is, Its Causes, and Treatment

Peritoneal, or else abdominal mesothelioma, commonly occurs in individuals with a description of extreme and frequent contact with asbestos that usually develops asbestosis. That said, pleural mesothelioma often occurs in persons subjected to low ranges of those fibers and that have not formerly developed asbestosis.

A number of the warning signs of mesothelioma can take years to appear and be very indistinct in nature. A lot of these warning signs are merely chalked up to the -aging process- and will be misdiagnosed. So, should you or someone you already know have a well-known exposure to asbestos and are exhibiting signs of a persistent lung complaint, you need to almost certainly see a medical doctor and allow them in on your little secret. Again, an exceedingly real danger here is that -the symptoms are much like those of getting older, and a lot of us are likely to overlook them until more harsh, and potentially lethal signs or symptoms occur-. This brings us to our next topic.

Symptoms

Diagnosing mesothelioma in the first phases is often exceedingly difficult because there are various conditions that produce similar symptoms. So, what are the progressive signs of Mesothelioma? Many people with pleural mesothelioma complain of shortness of breath and chest tenderness - in particular underneath the ribs, but other signs and symptoms can include:

- Pain at the site of origin

- Difficulty swallowing

- Inflammation of the neck along with face

- Weight-loss- Cough

- Respiratory infections

- Weakness- Digestive and/or bowel problems

- Soreness within the chest (stemming from fluid buildup and sometimes an indication of pleural mesothelioma)

Your doctor should have an x-ray performed or even an MRI for anyone that has a established contact with asbestos with these indicators. -Depending on the findings of your x-ray as well as your indicators, your medical professional will order multi-slice CT scanning otherwise an MRI scanning to determine whether there is a growth which may be a mesothelioma-. Bear in mind also that shortness of breath and pain in your chest because of an increase of fluid in the pleura are sometimes indicators of pleural mesothelioma, but signs of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain in addition to swelling as a result of a buildup of fluid in your abdomen. Further symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can include:

- Bowel obstruction,

- Blood clotting abnormalities

- Anemia (low blood count)

- Fever

These conditions could be the result of mesothelioma or, less serious conditions as a consequence of asbestos malignancies and the fact that symptoms of mesothelioma generally emerge many years following exposure.

Too, depending upon whether it's pleural or peritoneal, the effected organ(s) may possibly start to leak fluid into adjoining areas such as the space within the chest and may even exhibit symptoms similar to those appearing in congestive heart failure. (puffiness, swelling of limbs, excess weight) The symptoms slowly grow to be more noticeable prompting the patient to seek medical intercession. With the worsening of the illness, the initial indications emerge and are usually diffuse tenderness in your chest, but less prevalent than shortness of breath along with cough.

Okay, so you're perhaps thinking, -If I do have it - What's the treatment-? This is a useful question, but one that may have several responses subject to the phase of growth of the disease. Early detection of the cancer can entail antineoplastic drug treatments including chemotherapy and later stages possibly will include the use of this intervention in addition to radiation treatment. So, the scenario goes like this - after the diagnosis is made by a medical doctor, (usually a biopsy of sort) he will probably send you to an oncologist (cancer specialist). The oncologist will next conclude the best treatment for your specific situation. It may be just chemotherapy or it could be radiation therapy to reduce the tumor. On the other hand, maybe a surgical intervention along with the other two. Only a medical doctor will be able to tell. It boils down to this: You've just been diagnosed with a terminal kind of cancer. You've choices in this case to potentially make yourself better and exist a while longer. All these interventions come with probable risks. And, you may still die from your disease - What do you want to do?

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. It caused by previous exposure to asbestos. An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. Simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. The two major types of malignant mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma, which concerns the mesothelium membrane that surrounds the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma which concerns the mesothelium layer that covers the organs in the abdominal cavity. The people most at risk from being carriers of this cancer are those have worked with asbestos over the past thirty to fifty years. Because of this, the disease is most common in men between the ages of sixty and seventy as this is the group that commonly worked with asbestos during those years. Because of the lack of protection and regulations in those days, these workers were constantly exposed to the dust and fibres from the asbestos, which caused the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal. Many building materials used in both public and domestic premises prior to the banning of asbestos may contain asbestos. Those performing renovation works or diy activities may expose themselves to asbestos dust.

Mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. Mesothelioma is an extremely malignant and incurable cancer that infects the membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Affecting the mesothelial cells that make up the mesothelium - the outer lining that protects the body's major organs such as the heart, stomach and lungs. Pleural mesothelioma represents 75% of mesothelioma cases - but it is far from the only type of this deadly cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines, and is just as dangerous and deadly. Treatment of MM using conventional therapies has not proved successful and patients have a median survival time of 6 - 12 months after presentation. The clinical behaviour of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention Tips

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention

1. Health-care workers who specialize in part control are employing state-of-the art techniques to successfully fight pain.

2. During the initial stages of mesothelioma, pain can be relieved with over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

3. Drug therapy is the primary method for treating mesothelioma pain.

4. Non-Opoids are pain-relieving medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofin, which can be purchases over-the-counter and taken orally.

5. Opoids are the strongest medicines available to treat pain. Opoids, such as codeine, morphine, oxcodone, fentany, and hydromorphone, are very effective in relieving mesothelioma pain.

6. Adjuvant analgesics are medicines intended for purposes other than pain relief. A number of these are used to alleviate pain associated with mesothelioma, such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and steroids.

7. Emotional Support to Help Relieve Pain.As with all aspects of mesothelioma, emotional support from family or professional counseling can play a key role in pain management

8. For patients with localized disease, and who can tolerate a radical surgery, radiation is often given post-operatively as a consolidative treatment.

9. Chrysotile has been used more frequently, hence many mesotheliomas are caused by chrysotile.

10. Removal is taking place in schools and other public buildings throughout the U.S. The hope is that these measures will greatly reduce the occurrence of this cancer.

Pleural Mesothelioma - Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma which is characterized by the formation of cancerous tumors in pleura which is the protective lining of lung surrounding the chest cavity and diaphragm.

Pleural Mesothelioma Causes

Pleural Mesothelioma

Like other types of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma is also connected to asbestos exposure. Once asbestos fibers enter the body through inhalation they lodged on pleura and start changing its nature after passing one or two decades. These changes occur in the form of irritation and inflammation which results in the formation and proliferation of cancerous cells. Such developments lead to pleural thickening which further aggravates the condition by building fluid in chest cavity. Fluid building in pleural cavity put pressure on lungs and makes it difficult to breathe easily. At this stage patient feels that something is going wrong in its chest region which is creating problem in normal breathing and causing persistent pain and cough for him.

Pleural Mesothelioma - Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms

Various symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

* Persistent Cough
* Persistent Pain in Chest
* Lump Formation in Chest Area
* Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
* Dyspnea (Shortness of breath)
* Dysphagia (Difficulty in swallowing)
* Weight Loss
* Fatigue and Fever

Pleural Mesothelioma Diagnosis

In order to diagnose pleural mesothelioma imaging techniques including X-rays, MRI and CT scan are applied along with taking patients' medical history and current health state into account. All these measures helps in diagnosing the presence of cancerous cells inside the body and level of damage already occurred to pleural lining. If necessary then biopsy can also be recommended to take out the sample of fluid building around pleura through minor surgical process. This sample is then tested into laboratory in order to trace the presence of cancerous cells inside pleural cavity.

Pleural Mesothelioma Treatment

Like other types of mesothelioma it is also treated by applying one or combination of given treatment methods:

1- Radiotherapy (using radiations to destroy cancer cells)
2- Chemotherapy (injecting chemicals directly to affected part of pleura)
3- Surgery (cutting out the damaged portion completely)

The selection of treatment method depends upon the health condition of the patient and level of damage occurred to his body. Early diagnosis makes it easier to treat mesothelioma. So if anyone is feeling above mentioned symptoms then don't take it easy and take an appointment with your physician to find out the actual cause of this internal body disturbance.
