National Steel - Mesothelioma & Asbestos Exposure

Because of the necessity to insulate on-board pipes to prevent on-board fires, shipbuilders, including those at National Steel, exposed their workers to asbestos, and, as a result, the rare but aggressive cancer mesothelioma. Asbestos, which is known for its strong, tensile properties and its heat- and flame-resistance, is comprised of microscopic fibers, which, when breathed in, become lodged in the protective membrane that lines each of the major organs.
