Mesothelioma - Types and Symptoms

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that most often caused by asbestos exposure. However, symptoms of mesothelioma do not show up for many decades after exposure to asbestos. There are essentially three types of mesothelioma: pleura, peritoneum, pericardium and, and all of them have a devastating impact on victims and their families.

Mesothelioma is not a common form of cancer, and it is also the most deadly of all diseases related to asbestosExposure. Note that just because it is unusual, it is not a rare type of cancer considered. Since the symptoms of mesothelioma exhibits not very unique in that they tend to show, in other diseases, it is often difficult to diagnose. The treatment can no longer be effective by the time a diagnosis is made. It is one of the least responsive tumors to treatment.

Pleural mesothelioma affects the chest and lungs of the victim. Of the chest and lungs, itspreads to other organs in the body, including the brain. pleural mesothelioma is often not easy to recognize. Survival rates are usually about a year and a half from the onset of symptoms. A very small percentage may survive three to five years.

Mesothelioma symptoms include:
o pain in a specific area of the breast that does not seem to go away.
o Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing due to fluid retention in the chest.

o Fever

o Hemoptysis
o Jaundice
o Low blood sugar levels
o Blood clots
o tumor masses

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdomen and often spreads to nearby organs such as spleen, liver or intestine. The survival rate is very low, with most patients survive about ten months after the development of symptoms.

Common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are:
o SevereAbdominal pain
o Excessive fluid in the abdomen
o Difficult bowel movement
o Nausea and vomiting
o Fever
o Swollen feet

Pericardial mesothelioma affects the heart and is the least common of the mesothelioma cancers. This type of cancer penetrates into the pericardium, the sac around the heart. If the disease progresses, the heart is not in a position to deliver the right amount of oxygen for the rest of the body. The health of the victim falls veryrapidly during the progression of the disease. The most common symptoms are similar to a heart attack with nausea, shortness of breath and chest pain.

Mesothelioma treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, although there are some experimental treatments, the disease currently tried in its earlier stages. This serious illness affects more than just the victim, it affects their loved ones as well.
