Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a disease affecting the lining of the abdomen, or peritoneum are. Like the other types of mesothelioma, it is from exposure to asbestos, which causes widespread in many industrial products including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring, textiles, and insulation. The form of peritoneal mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer that accounts for less than one quarter of all mesothelioma cases.Like other forms of the disease, it is unremarkable until decades after exposure to asbestos.
While peritoneal mesotheliomas are less common than pleural mesotheliomas, they tend to over-invasive and therefore often result in a shorter life expectancy of patients. An early diagnosis of the disease is important. The relief and treatment of people with this disease suffer dramatically improves the sooner it is detected. Unfortunately, it is often not diagnosed until italready well advanced.
The first step in detecting peritoneal mesothelioma includes X-rays and CT scans, but a definitive diagnosis is by biopsy, which typically removes a small piece of tissue obtained for analysis. At this time, although there are several treatment options available, such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, there is no cure.
Typical symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include abdominal pain, weakness, weight lossLoss of appetite, nausea, and abdominal swelling. Since these symptoms are so common and can be attributed to many other diseases as mesothelioma, the diagnosis is often delayed until it is too late for treatment to help much more than the patient to feel better.
